r/aoe2 - Running Original Age of Empires 2 on Windows 7 I've recently gotten back into Age of Empires 2 and wanted to run the original disc version I have on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit install. However, when I went to run the game, it showed it running in Task Manager then it closed. After some trial and error, I figured it out, and I thought I should post it here to anyone having trouble with the originals. Age of Empires 2 Direct Draw Compatibility issue - Arqade Under the compatibility tab, set it to Windows XP Service pack 3 and see if that resolves the issue. Running as administrator I've found to sometimes help as well. If that doesn't work, Age of Empire 2 HD is available on Steam, which is fully compatible with Windows 8.1 (I played it just the other day on 8.1 and it worked flawlessly).
